ONSITE Slow Stitching Mixed Media Art w/ Lena Vieira

Lena Vieira Headshot 2025

7:00 – 8:30 pm (EST), every 2nd & 4th Wednesday in the CREATING room.

All skill levels are welcome. I want to share this wonderful, meditative handiwork with you.

Slow stitching or intuitive sewing combines techniques and traditions from quilting, mending, embroidery, Japanese Sashiko and Indian Kantha. For centuries people have used hand stitching to mend, create textiles and adorn clothing or furnishings. Common and versatile stitches will be taught along with embroidery stitches.

In this class we will create a small art piece with scraps of cotton fabric and embroidery floss. We will explore color, texture, composition and make space for a quiet, mindful practice. You will find slow stitch projects are very portable with no right or wrong way to create.

I love to use this as a self-care practice as slow stitching requires you to be fully engaged. With every stitch I find a deeper sense of calm.

There will be lots of interesting fabric, beautiful embroidery thread and a variety of needles. If you feel inspired to bring some cloth, lace, textile scraps, etc, you are welcome to.

Her approach to her artwork as in other aspects of her life is emotional, looking for growth, healing and meaning. Lena is a student at The Somatic Institute for Women and loves to integrate the teachings of shadow work and feminine exploration into her pieces.
